40th Anniversary Celebration
The scene in the room at the Celebration. |
The earliest
meetings were mainly "swap" sessions but by Easter 1968 we had formed a
Committee and arranged meetings for the remainder of that
season. A full programme for 1968-69 was prepared with the
usual items of Auctions, Quiz, Club Competition, Letter "A", "B",
etc. The numbers present at meetings were usually 15-18 with
a total of some 30 on the Packet List, started by Harry
Leighton in September 1968. It was in 1968 that
"P.J." Elkins gave his
first display to us on the theme of "Christmas".
To commemorate the
40 years the club held a celebration in July, 2008
to
which
past and present members were invited. In all over 60 people came and
had an enjoyable evening. The welcome was given by the
current Chairman, Tim
Usher and the Anniversary Address was from the President, Eric
Harris. Eric was there on day one and has great memories of his years
with the club.
A very extensive
buffet and refreshments were served
followed by a toast, proposed by Tim Usher to "The Members". Tim also
took the
opportunity to voice the Club’s appreciation of Jack Davey, our
Secretary, and the
substantial efforts Jack makes on behalf of the club. Eric Harris
proposed a toast to "The Club" and he looks forward to another 40
successful years.
There
were displays from members of the
“favourite sheet” in their collection plus a selection of photos,
programmes and newspaper cuttings from
the extensive club archive.
To close the evening everyone was presented with a copy of the 1968 -
2008 Commemorative Brochure.
